External Jail Programs Clerk

Job Summary: The purpose of this job is to coordinate and facilitate programs and services for the inmates while in custody and help them prepare for their release. Additionally, may need to be able to supervise inmates performing a variety of work to maintain the CCSO facility and related grounds, including the fish farm and hydroponics area.
Essential Job Functions:
Schedules eligible/court ordered inmates for classes/programs for in person and online classes, tracks inmate programs attendance, escorts inmates to/from class and communicates with case managers regarding inmate progress.
Answers inmate requests, including requests for transportation, legal material, St. Vincent, etc. and provides information regarding a variety of assistance programs.
Provides a variety of services to inmates, notary and copy services, preparing/issuing Pro Se packets and issuing Bibles, prayer rugs and other religious items per the Chaplain's approval.
Distributes legal mail from the Jail Mail Clerk.
Communicates/coordinates with other staff/departments regarding inmate related matters, including inmate accounts, mail, laundry, etc.
Coordinates/supervises inmate workers performing assigned tasks, including transporting inmates to/from assigned work area(s), training inmates in appropriate/safe work procedures and inspecting work completed.
Conducts routine preventive maintenance on a variety of landscape related equipment, including changing oil, adjusting brakes, repairing tires, diagnosing problems, recommending repairs, and requesting supplies.
Additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:
High school graduation or G.E.D. equivalent and either six (6) months office support and/or (6) months maintenance background or closely related work. May need to become a Notary Public within (60-90) days.
Physical Effort Required:
The work of this class primarily involves light work to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office equipment and raising objects, also may involve exerting up to 25 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 26 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
Working Conditions:
This class primarily works in an office setting but can also include working outside involving exposure to heat/humidity, chemicals and moving machinery. There is some possible exposure to physical harm and/or disease due to working with/around inmates. NOTE: All employees who have direct inmate contact are required to have a medical exam/screening which includes a PPD (TB screening) prior to job assignment. Any positives on the PPD will require further evaluations by the Health Department. Re-examination shall be given according to a defined need or schedule.
