Corrections Deputy

Job Summary: Under general supervision, this class performs a variety of professional detention-oriented activities involved in maintaining the health, welfare and security of inmates confined to the Charlotte County direct supervision jail.
Essential Job Functions:
Observes and controls inmate behavior, including enforcing disciplinary rules/policies, physically restraining inmates with appropriate restraining devices and reporting observations, to maintain security of assigned facility.
Transports inmates to a variety of locations within the State of Florida in accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulations.
Searches/conducts checks of cells and other inmate housing to verify inmate status/location, identify contraband investigate/compile information related to inmate grievances and hearings. May testify in court regarding findings/observations.
Operates/inspects a variety of technical equipment, including lifesaving equipment, safety/surveillance equipment, Intoxilizers, cameras and related electronic equipment to ensure appropriate operability of the equipment/systems.

Minimum Requirements:
Completion of approved training and certification, including CCSO Field Training, as a Corrections Deputy in compliance with the requirements of the State of Florida. Must possess a valid Florida driver's license. Must be a U.S. citizen.
Physical Effort Required:
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of standing, walking, hearing, and kneeling, reaching, feeling, grasping, pushing, pulling, bending, climbing, crawling, fingering, and performing repetitive motions. Must be able to perform work pushing/pulling/grappling of persons or objects up to 200 pounds of force occasionally: 20 pounds frequently (uniform vest, belt): and 10 pounds constantly. Must be physically fit to pass annual job-related Physical Agility Test.
Working Conditions:
Some exposure to verbally abusive and physically threatening individuals. Noise levels range from quiet to loud. The employee is required to work shift work including weekends, holidays, and overtime, 12-hour shifts in a 24/hour facility. Must be able to respond to call outs during off hours. Direct inmate contact. Work in confined spaces for prolonged periods. Climb up and down stairs. NOTE: All employees who have direct inmate contact are required to have a medical exam/screening which includes a PPD (TB screening) prior to job assignment. Any positives on the PPD will require further evaluations by the Health Department. Re-examination shall be given according to a defined need or schedule.
